The Client

Established for 44 years this summer and located in the village of Thornton Dale near Pickering, Mathewson’s is a car dealer and auctioneers, which specialise in vintage vehicles. During ITV’s Heartbeat era, 1992-2010, many of the period/vintage cars, motorcycles and coaches seen on screen were loaned to the TV company by local company Mathewson’s.

There are 2 main focuses for the business, these vintage car sales and increasingly more dominantly the vintage auctions. As an ancillary to car sales and auctions, visitors to Thornton Dale are able to wander around the sale room and auction holding rooms, which double up as a museum. Mathewson’s have a high level of experience in the motor industry and they have established themselves as classic and vintage vehicle specialists.

The Problem

The auction side of the business, which was established in 2011, has over the last few years become a more significant arm of the business and it is this particular growth area that has encouraged David to take fresh look at the company’s online presence to further establish Mathewson’s as a highly professional and experienced vintage and classic vehicle auctioneers.

The old website was quite dated and basic, there was a lack of design and it was not mobile friendly. The site was an ‘off the shelf’ CMS website (Content Management System, which had never really provided that well for either the user or the administrator. Audience engagement was quite poor and the user was not really sure what kind of business they were engaging with.

The Solution

The new website needed to have roughly a 75% bias to the auction, 25% to car sales, with a gesture to the museum and hiring a classic; it needed to be confident, informative and professional providing the right messages for clients looking to either buy directly from the garage or wishing to engage with Mathewson’s auction services.

The new site clearly demonstrates Mathewson’s expertise and professionalism. We have used a feed to social media platforms - making good use of social media and testimonials is an excellent way to provide insight into customer service. The new site makes good use of data capturing return forms to allow Mathewson’s to keep all interested parties up to date with auction news and schedules - this also helps to drive traffic to their website.
